Mississippi Agriculture Overview

Agriculture is Mississippi’s number one industry, employing approximately 29% of the state’s workforce either directly or indirectly. Agriculture in Mississippi is a 6.3 billion-dollar industry. There are approximately 42,000 farms in the state covering 11 million acres. The average size farm is composed of 262 acres. Agriculture makes a significant contribution to all 82 counties. In celebration of the efforts of those who work so hard to feed and clothe us, we present this overview of Mississippi’s top ten agricultural crops.

1   POULTRY / EGGS - $2.3 BILLION
     
  > Approximately 808 million broilers were produced in 2009.
> 1,478 Farms.
 
     
2   FORESTRY - $817 MILLION
     
  > 19,600,000 acres.
> 125,000 forest landowners.
 
     
3   SOYBEANS - $432 MILLION
     
  > 77,040,000 bushels in 2009.
> 2,695 Farms.
 
     
4   CORN - $380 MILLION
     
  > 88,750,000 bushels produced in 2009.
> 2,113 Farms.
 
     
5   RICE - $214 MILLION
     
 

> 15,827,000 hundredweight rice produced in 2009.
> 341 Farms.

 
     
6   CATFISH - $182 MILLION
     
  > 407 operations.
> 70,000 acres of production in 2009.
 
     
7   HAY - $143 MILLION
     
  > 820,000 acres harvested.
> 2.46 million tons produced.
 
     
8   CATTLE/CALVES - $138 MILLION
     
  > 960,000 head in 2009.

  Horticulture crops include vegetables, melons, potatoes,
fruits, tree nuts, berries, nursery, greenhouses, floriculture,
sod, and Christmas trees.

  > 345,000 hogs and pigs.
> 439 Farms.
> 1.6 million pounds sold.
 
     
12   MILK - $36 MILLION
     
  > 149 Grade A Dairy Herds.
 
     
13   WHEAT - $33 MILLION
     
  > 210,000 acres harvested.
> 10.5 million bushels produced.
 
     
14   SWEET POTATOES - $25 MILLION
     
  > 9,100 acres harvested.
